Treehouse with blackbird

'Treehouse with blackbird' - digital pic & mix - George Roberts - March 2020

I am inside looking out

Today I was told to adjust my watch
And advance to British Summer Time

Perversely it snowed a little this morning
Snow to herald the coming of summer
So I watched the flakes fall silent

A blackbird outside in the garden
Sensed the arrival of spring
And sings as it seeks
Opportunities

Today as I adjusted
To my local time
A blackbird looked at me
Whilst I pushed the buttons
On my Casio G-Shock watch

Darby's Hard

"Darby's Hard" by kind permission of Mr James King - watercolour on paper circa 1980 - George Roberts,

Darby's Hard - Gorleston- Norfolk in the 1980s was largely unused and a quiet riverside mooring.
Occasionally somebody worked on a boat on the Hard which shelved gently into the water, but the amount of activity there was negligible compared with the years in the latter half of the 19th century and in the early 20th century when it was a hive of industry as the Darby family plied their trade there as shipwrights and boat repairers. In 1980 when I spent my lunch break painting 'en plein air' at Darby's Hard , an old redundant trawler was moored up and presented a 'still life' rendered in peeling paint, rotting timber and rusting steel plate.

I was clearly not the first watercolourist to have whipped out my easel at Darby's Hard!

Tea Dance at the Tree Crematorium

'Tea Dance at the Tree Crematorium' - study for an etching George Roberts March 2020
Last night I dreamed in bed and Californian technicolor
A dream in which we dance across a dark and crumpled landscape
Out of step we pirouette under sky blue sky and bitter orange sun
A black bird watches our Greek Tragedy unfold as we slumber
We drink tea and cavort whilst a tree is consumed by fire
I watch the flames take hold as we dance together in our sleep.
